چکیده

Shear failure models have traditionally dominated the research on slab avalanche initiation in snow science, but evidence has accumulated that they tell us only part of the story. In these models weak snowpack layers are regarded as compounds of zero thickness, but in reality they often consist of ice grain aggregates of finite thickness and high porosity. When such granular aggregates fail, the remaining fragments can rearrange in a tighter packing and the weak layer undergoes a reduction in volume. This compaction has fundamental consequences for understanding slab avalanche release. We present a new theory of fracture initiation and propagation in weak layers, based on the mathematical concept of mixed-mode anticracks. Energy criteria for crack propagation and skier triggering are obtained from the theory. Initiation and propagation of anticrack-mediated fracture are illustrated on field measurements.

Fracture Dynamic Propagation Model of High-Energy Gas Fracturing for Casing Perforated Well

The onshore oil and natural gas industries of China have started a large-scale development when crude oil reserves have been difficult to recover. The stratum fracture modification is an indispensable measure to efficiently develop oil and gas fields. Hydraulic fracturing is the most important reservoir stimulation technique, but it is still faced with various problems such as the failure to fr...

A boundary element analysis of crack-propagation mechanism of micro-cracks in rock-like specimens under a uniform normal tension

In this work, the mechanism for fracture of brittle substances such as rocks under a uniform normal tension is considered. The oriented straight micro-cracks are mostly created in all the polycrystalline materials resulting from the stress concentrations. The present work focuses on the interactions of the pre-existing micro-cracks, which can grow and propagate within a rock-like specimen. The ...

Cement-Implant Interface Fracture Failure by Crack Initiation Due to Interface Cavity Stress Concentration

Nowadays total joint replacements are widely used in the world, so in average 800,000 joint surgeries are done yearly only in Europe and North America. However implant loosening is and remains as the major issue of all implant failures and therefore causes revision surgery procedures. Studies and experiments have identified poor fixation of implants most likely is the main cause of long term im...

A process-based approach to estimate point snow instability

Snow instability data provide information about the mechanical state of the snow cover and are essential for forecasting snow avalanches. So far, direct observations of instability (recent avalanches, shooting cracks or whumpf sounds) are complemented with field tests such as the rutschblock test, since no measurement method for instability exists. We propose a new approach based on snow mechan...

Modelling of Crack Growth Using a New Fracture Criteria Based Peridynamics

Peridynamics (PD) is a nonlocal continuum theory based on integro-differential equations without spatial derivatives. The elongation fracture criterion is implicitly incorporated in the PD theory, and fracture is a natural outcome of the simulation. On the other hand, a new fracture criterion based on the crack opening displacement combined with peridynamic (PD-COD) is proposed. When the relati...
